On This Day in IUPUI History: May 10, 2014

May 10, 2014.

On this day, the Honorable Susan W. Brooks, United States Representative for the 5th congressional district of Indiana, gave the commencement address to graduates of the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in the school's commencement ceremony in the Indiana Convention Center. On that day, the School of Law conferred 322 degrees to graduates. Additionally, the school awarded 69 certificates to JD graduates in specific areas of law.

Brooks, a 1985 Juris Doctor (JD) recipient from the McKinney School of Law, had a long record of public service. After several years in private law practice, she was a deputy mayor of Indianapolis in the administration of Mayor Stephen Goldsmith. In 2001, President George W. Bush appointed her as U.S. attorney for the southern district of Indiana. After serving as general counsel for Ivy Tech Community College system, she was first elected to represent Indiana's 5th congressional district in 2012.

The congresswoman is one of several graduates of IUPUI's law school to hold important elective offices, joining vice presidents, governors, and U.S. senators as alumni and alumnae of the school.
