March 9, 1979.
On this day, the Indianapolis Symphony Woodwind Quintet played a free concert of wide-ranging music in the IUPUI Lecture Hall.
The ensemble, made up of members of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, were artists in residence at IUPUI for the spring semester and performed a number of concerts in a variety of campus venues. The artist-in-residence program was an effort to bring artists and the arts to campus to enrich campus life. As well, it was part of an effort to encourage the performing arts in Indianapolis's downtown area. IUPUI chancellor Dr. Glenn W. Irwin, Jr., expressed his support for the plan. "We are pleased to establish a residency at IUPUI for this excellent ensemble," he said. The photo below shows that the quintet also played outdoors on a makeshift stage in front of University Library, now Taylor Hall.
