March 20, 1997.
On this day, the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I women's swimming and diving finals began at the IUPUI Natatorium. Opened in 1982, the Natatorium became one of the best venues in the world for swimming competitions and the frequent location for national and international competitions. Top swimmers have recorded many world-record times in the IUPUI pool. The 1997 NCAA Division I women's championships were the sixth time the competition was held in the Natatorium. The facility is booked for major swimming events years in advance and attracts thousands of visitors to Indianapolis.
In 2015-2016 the Natatorium underwent a $20 million renovation to upgrade many aspects of the building. The facility is now poised to host many more competitions in years to come.
