August 8, 1980
On this day, the Division of Labor Studies announced a drive to recruit union members, stewards, and officers as students into the program.
Labor Studies has a long record in Indiana University of educating women and men of organized labor about the history of the labor movement and methods of organization. It has offered certificate, associate, and bachelor degrees, as well as graduate courses. Long housed in the School of Continuing Studies in IUPUI, the division sojourned independently for several years. A crisis in funding occurred in 2005-2006 when legislators of the General Assembly zeroed out the Labor Studies line in the state budget. Eventually, Labor Studies found a new home in the School of Social Work.
