ABSTRACT

Indiana University established the office of Vice President and Dean, Research and Advanced Studies in 1965. After the creation of IUPUI an Associate Dean for Research and Advanced Studies at IUPUI reported to the Chancellor as Dean of the Office of Sponsored Programs.

Several of the Indiana University professional schools at Indianapolis offered graduate degrees prior to the creation of IUPUI. The Indiana University Graduate School offered graduate programs in the basic sciences through the School of Medicine at the Indianapolis campus in the 1950s. Likewise, the Purdue University Graduate School authorized graduate education at its Indianapolis campus. In 1968 Indiana University-Indianapolis established the Office of the Director of Graduate Programs. With the creation of IUPUI both Purdue University schools and Indiana University schools maintained separate graduate offices that coordinated administration with the graduate schools of their respective universities. In 1979 a Director of the Office of Graduate Studies was appointed to unify IUPUI graduate programs. It was later called the Office of Graduate Affairs, and served to support graduate programs. In 1986 the IUPUI Graduate Office was established, but both graduate schools of Indiana University and Purdue University controlled policies relative to graduate education in their respective schools. An IUPUI Graduate Affairs Committee with representatives from the IU and PU graduate schools and the IUPUI schools and departments coordinates policies for IUPUI.

In 1989 the Indiana University Office of the Dean of the Graduate School was combined with that of the Associate Vice President for Research, and IUPUI created the Office of Research and University Graduate School (RUGS).
